Types of Bras and How They Fit
A bra style is more than a look. Cup height, seams, gore width, wire shape and fabric determine where the bra creates space and support.

Balconette Bras
A horizontal, lower-cut cup that sits wide across the chest.
- Construction. Wide-set straps, straight top edge, moderate coverage.
- May be useful for. Fuller busts wanting lift with a wide, straight neckline.
- Common fit challenge. Tissue escaping at the top edge if the cup runs small.
- What to check. Check for spillage at the top edge specifically, not just overall volume.
Plunge Bras
A low, angled centre gore designed for low necklines.
- Construction. Low, narrow gore; cups angled toward the centre.
- May be useful for. Close-set breasts and low-cut tops.
- Common fit challenge. Floating gore for wider-set or fuller shapes.
- What to check. Check whether the gore sits close to the breastbone or floats away.
Full-Cup Bras
Maximum coverage, enclosing the breast fully.
- Construction. Higher-cut cup, wider wire, often a wider gore.
- May be useful for. Fuller busts wanting full containment and support.
- Common fit challenge. Can look boxy or ride high on a shallower shape.
- What to check. Check the top edge doesn't stand away from the body.
Demi-Cup Bras
Roughly half-coverage, cutting across the upper portion of the breast.
- Construction. Lower cut than a full cup, higher than a balconette in some brands.
- May be useful for. Lower necklines wanting more shaping than a balconette.
- Common fit challenge. Overflow at the top edge on a fuller or more projected shape.
- What to check. Check top-edge containment while moving, not just standing still.
T-Shirt Bras
A smooth, seamless or lightly padded moulded cup.
- Construction. Rigid, pre-formed moulded cup, minimal seaming.
- May be useful for. A smooth line under fitted clothing.
- Common fit challenge. Gaping, since the rigid mould doesn't adapt to shape the way soft cups do.

Wireless Bras
Cups supported by fabric and structure instead of an underwire.
- Construction. Wide band, structured fabric or foam instead of wire.
- May be useful for. Comfort priority, or anatomy that wires suit poorly.
- Common fit challenge. The gore may not lie flat by design, which isn't automatically a fit problem.
- What to check. Judge fit by band and cup support rather than gore position for this style.
Minimizer Bras
Redistributes and compresses tissue to reduce projection under clothing.
- Construction. Wider, less-curved cups that spread tissue outward and flatten it.
- May be useful for. Reducing projection under fitted or structured clothing.
- Common fit challenge. Can trade projection for width, which isn't comfortable for everyone.
- What to check. Compare how it feels in motion, not just under a fitted top.
Strapless Bras
A bra designed to stay up with no strap support at all.
- Construction. Firmer, often boned band; grippy edges.
- May be useful for. Strapless or off-shoulder outfits.
- Common fit challenge. Depends entirely on band fit and grip, since a loose band will slip.
- What to check. The band-only test matters even more than usual for this style.
Sports Bras
Built for support during movement rather than shaping under clothing.
- Construction. Compression, encapsulation, or a hybrid of the two.
- May be useful for. Any activity involving movement, since the right construction depends on intensity.
- Common fit challenge. A calculated everyday size doesn't automatically map to a sports-bra size.
- What to check. Use your calculated size as a starting point, then fit-check the specific style.
Choose construction before decoration
Lace, colour and trim don't determine fit. Seams, stretch versus rigid fabric, moulded foam, side support panels and band structure do. Two bras that look similar can behave very differently once you compare their actual construction.
