Projection describes how breast volume is distributed relative to the area where the breast attaches to the chest. A shallower shape spreads volume across a broader or taller base. A projected shape places more volume forward from a smaller base. Neither shape is better, and projection is not the same as breast size.

Similar volume can use different dimensions

Think of two containers holding the same amount. One is broad and shallow. The other is narrow and deep. Their capacity can match while their dimensions differ.

Bra cups work in the same way. Two people can wear the same size and need different cup depths, wire widths and apex positions.

What a shallow shape may need

A shallower breast often works better with a broader, less deep cup. Very deep or narrow cups may leave empty space at the apex or create pressure around the wire.

Shallow does not always mean wide-rooted, so use the wire position as evidence rather than assuming the root width.

  • The cup slides below the breast fold. The breast may need more immediate depth than the cup provides.
  • The top gaps while the bottom feels tight. The cup may be too shallow or too tall.
  • The wire extends far beyond the breast root. The cup may be too wide, especially if the central depth is still insufficient.
  • The breast does not reach the cup apex. The cup may be too projected or the apex may sit in the wrong place.

Start from the same size. Compare a shallow moulded cup with a deeper seamed cup. Check whether the wire stays in the fold, whether the centre approaches the chest and whether the cup remains stable during movement.

Then compare one adjacent cup if the volume is still uncertain.
