Choose a bra by matching where the cup provides space and structure to where your breast tissue needs it. Focus on projection, upper or lower fullness, root width and spacing. These dimensions are more useful than trying to identify one “official” breast-shape label.

Start with four shape dimensions

1. Projection

Does the breast extend forward from a narrower base, or is the tissue spread more broadly across the chest?

2. Fullness

When supported, is there more fullness above the nipple, below it or relatively even?

3. Root width

Does the breast tissue attach across a narrow or broad area on the chest?

4. Spacing

Is there little space between the breasts, more space, or a mix depending on support?

If you have more projection

Look for:

  • seamed cups;
  • depth near the wire;
  • multi-part construction;
  • enough room at the centre;
  • wires that remain at the breast root.

Watch for:

  • cups sliding down;
  • space at the bottom;
  • top-edge gaps with lower-cup pressure;
  • a band that feels tight only when the cups are worn normally.

A shallow moulded cup may not provide enough forward room even in the correct nominal volume.

If your shape is shallower

Look for:

  • cups with volume spread across width;
  • lower or medium projection;
  • shorter cups if tall cups gape;
  • styles that follow a broad root.

Watch for:

  • deep cups with empty space at the apex;
  • wires that are too narrow;
  • cups that create a pointed or unsupported shape because the volume sits too far forward.

If you are fuller on the bottom

You may prefer:

If you are fuller on the top

If you are close-set

Look for:

  • narrow or low centre panels;
  • plunge styles where appropriate;
  • overlapping gore construction.

Watch for a wide, tall centre pressing on breast tissue.

If you are wide-set

You may prefer:

  • side-support panels;
  • cups that guide tissue forward;
  • a centre shape that sits naturally without forcing an artificial position.

A plunge may suit some wide-set shapes, but the style name alone does not guarantee compatibility.

If one breast is larger

Fit the larger side.

Then adjust the smaller side with:

  • strap adjustment;
  • stretch lace;
  • removable padding;
  • a small insert;
  • a more adaptable cup.

Do not compress the larger side to make both cups look identical.

How to test a shape recommendation

  1. Start from your measurement-based size.
  2. Try one bra with the suggested feature.
  3. Compare an adjacent cup size in the same model.
  4. Check wire position and cup depth.
  5. Move before deciding.
