Sister sizes use different band numbers and cup letters while keeping the cup capacity in a similar volume family. They work because cup letters are relative to the band. When the band becomes smaller, the cup letter moves up. When the band becomes larger, the cup letter moves down.

Cup letters change with the band

A D cup is not one fixed container. A 32D is smaller than a 36D because the cup is scaled to a smaller bra frame.

If you move from 34D to 36D, both the band and cup become larger. Moving to 36C increases the band while keeping the cup capacity closer to the original 34D.

The same logic works in the other direction. A 32D would reduce both band and cup capacity. A 32DD gives a firmer band while keeping the cup closer to the 34D volume family.

Use opposite changes for the band and cup.

32DD -> 34D -> 36C

Similar capacity does not mean identical fit

The phrase “same cup volume” is a practical shortcut. Sister-size cups have a similar approximate capacity, but the complete bras use different frames.

Changing the band can also change wire width, strap placement, centre width, side height and the way the cup is pulled against the body. A 32DD and 36C will not feel interchangeable on the same ribcage.

This is why the nearest one-step sister size is usually the most useful. Each additional step creates a larger change in the frame.

When sister sizing is useful

Sister sizing works best when the cups already contain the breast tissue and the main problem is band tension.

It can help when the band rides up, a particular model has unusually firm elastic, your underbust sits close to a band boundary or the exact size is unavailable.

Check the cups again after changing the band. Similar capacity does not guarantee the same wire or cup shape.

When sister sizing keeps the original problem

Do not preserve the cup capacity when the cups already overflow, remain loose throughout, sit on breast tissue or lack the required depth.

A sister size will not fix a cup that is too shallow, a wire that is too narrow or a centre that is too wide. Those are volume or construction problems.

Why distant sister sizes are poor substitutes

A long sister-size row may include several bands.

30F -> 32E -> 34DD -> 36D -> 38C

The theoretical cup family is similar, but the 30F and 38C use very different frames. The larger band may provide less support, place the straps farther apart and use wider wires. Treat the row as an explanation of scaling, not a list of equal choices.

The sizing system changes the letters

The principle stays the same, but the cup sequence must match the selected system. UK sizing commonly includes DD, E, F and FF. EU sizing usually follows single letters. US brands do not all label the steps after D in the same way.

Never calculate sister sizes by guessing the next alphabetic letter. Use the explicit sequence for the brand or sizing system.

Choose the next size from the fit problem

  • The band rides up and the cups fit. Try the closest smaller-band sister size.
  • The band feels too firm on its own and the cups fit. Try the closest larger-band sister size.
  • The band rides up and the cups overflow. You need a smaller band and more cup capacity, not a direct sister size that preserves the undersized cups.
  • The band feels tight and the centre floats. Test the band alone. The cups may be too small or too shallow.
